Studying in Ise: What It Means
Kogakkan University was founded in 1882 by the decree of Prince Kuninomiya Asahiko, who was the Chief Priest of Ise Jingu. Since its foundation, Kogakkan University has inherited the long tradition of the study of Japanese culture, with Shinto at Ise Jingu as its core. Our university, maintaining its long history and tradition, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2032.
Our campus is located on a hill, commonly known as Kuratayama, between Geku and Naiku, in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and is surrounded by lush and plentiful natural woods. The keys to successful study at our university, however, are not limited to the natural surroundings. Some of the other key factors include our distinguished professors with outstanding academic achievements and a wealth of practical experience, our accommodating administrative personnel who support our students’ academic pursuits, and most importantly, our students learning together. This combination of factors is what truly creates our university’s environment that best supports our students’ academic progress. The academic culture that has developed from this environment was not something that can be created in a day.
The foundation of studying at our university is to foster a basic understanding of the history, traditions, and culture of our nation with an ethical and tolerant perspective based on the spirit of Shinto. In this way we have gathered responsible and hard-working students who are committed to learning.
While maintaining the dignity of more than 140 years of history and tradition in Ise, Ise Jingu’s homeland, Kogakkan University will continue to foster an academic culture that works toward solving the challenges present within today’s society.
